OVERVIEW: eVolving Skills, eMerging options - A Partnership for Participation Project

The team at Cobram Community House  is looking forward to re-shaping our CGEA (Certificate in General Education for Adults) training to include elective units offered via E-learning.

Our project is aimed at engaging "disengaged" and "at risk" youth in a program that will broaden their skills and abilities.
Overview:
Our project will operate on four levels simultaneously:
·         Developing e-literacy
·         Expanding students’ skill bases
·         Allowing students to “taste” vocationally focused Certificates through the completion of a unit.
·         Exposure to potential learning and employment pathways

We will re-shape our CGEA to include elective units in the following areas:
  • Business (BSBOHS201A)
  • Community Services (CHCCOM302C)
  • Information technology (ICAU1133B)
  • Hospitality (SITXOHS002A).

Our project will develop core skills such as literacy and numeracy, as well as units in vocational certificates.  This will also allow students to ‘taste’ an area of study.  The concept of ‘tasting’ enables students to continue to develop their core skills while identifying and trying a vocationally specific unit without committing to a full Certificate qualification.

These elective units will be offered via e-learning strategies, meaning we can cater for a range of interests within the one classroom.  Normally this is not possible within a formal classroom situation and numbers generally limit the range we can offer.  This method will enable our CGEA students to “taste” areas of potential further study and specialisation while developing their literacy and numeracy skills.  Students will be able to complete a unit of their preferred subject on line and therefore hold a ‘credit’ should they decide to take up the course in its entirety.

This will enable students to expand their skill base, trial areas of potential interest as well as become familiar with using on-line learning techniques and tools, it will also enhance CGEA with a vocational component.
